SYRIA ISSUE

Today my friend Daboo came after a long vacation from GOA.. And he came to my place to meet me..basically he wanted to make me feel jealous , showing photographs and telling all the story in very minute details about what they did in GOA..and bla bla bla.... we were talking to each other , suddenly my father came in to my room with a boy of 12th class.. and ordered me to explain him the issue of Syria..from starting to end.. Daboo also said , that he also want to know.. and then my story starts -

Me - Do you know where is Syria?

Daboo - On this earth ( and started laughing... like anything...)

( i gave him a stern look ) and said - Daboo if you want to listen then you will keep you mouth shut.. Ok..

Boy  ( B) - No , I do not know..

(showed them in MAP...)

As you can see in the map DAMASCUS is the capital of SYRIA....

B - Ok....

Me - Listen to me very carefully and when i will complete then you can ask your doubts..ok???

Daboo - Ok...

As you know from past 2 years there is sever unrest in Middle - East.. Various issues are responsible for this crisis , Shia- Sunni conflict in one among them in fact the important one .

Both Shia and Sunni follows the fundamental of ISLAM and the holy QURAN book but differences originates from the question of who will succeed the Prophet Muhammad as leader of the Muslim community after his death.

Sunni says - Abu Bakr , a close companion of prophet ,would be caliph ( socio - political leader)
Shia says - Phophet's son-in-law Ali will be caliph of Muslim community.

About Pr. Assad - President Assad's father ruled Syria for nearly 30 years and  died in 2000 , from 2000 to this date , Bashar al- Assad is the president of Syria. Assad's family belongs to Shia community of Muslims. But nearly 75% of Syria's population is Sunni Muslims. Assad has filled all the important official positions in his government with his family members.Their is corruption , inflation , unemployment etc... Syria was in very critical situation.
In January 2011 , revolution in Tunisia marked the start of Arab Spring. In March violence broke out in Syria when a group of children were arrested for writing political graffiti and many were killed by security forces. This incident ignite protest in Syria. Protester demanded president's to leave office like Egypt's Hosni Mubarak. Assad promised to make changes and he lifted the country's emergency law.

( According to Syrian emergency law , Government can detain anyone without any charges and hold them indefinitely)

But just 4 days after the law was lifted in April 2011 , Syria regime sent thousand's of troops into Darra for a wide scale crackdown. Since then violence has only increased , now it became a full fledged war and more than 10,000 citizens had been killed by Country's Military.

Supporter's / Opposer's  of Assad-

SUPPORTER's

IRAN - Ruled by SHIA.

CHINA - Has massive investment in Syria specially in energy sector. Got major defence contracts from syria Doesn't want America to dominate in this region.

RUSSIA -  Syria buy arms and ammunition worth 700$ million per year from Russia. In Syria's port city Tartus, Russia has its only Military basin Mediterranean sea. There are an estimated 30,000 Russian citizens living in Syria , most women and children.

OPPOSER's -

Apart from Syrian Citizen's few countries also oppose Assad.

SAUDI ARABIA - Because ruled by Sunnis.

BAHRAIN - Ruled by Sunnis.

USA - Syria support's Hamas and Hezbollah while sharing a border with Israel. If USA can install a puppet government in Syria then he can isolate IRAN.

  • US and many western countries have imposed economic sanction against Syria.
  • UNSC is not persuaded by US and it's allies.
  • China and Russia have vetoed several proposal's on SYRIA in the UNSC.
  • Saudi and Bahrain providing weapons to the Syrian rebels.
Kofi Annan peace plan for Syria -

In Feb 2012 , Annan was appointed as the join UN- Arab League special envoy to Syria to settle down the Syrian crisis.  In March - 2012 , he submitted 6 point peace plan. According to this plan , Assad would ceasefire and withdraw the troops and crackdown. Then government and rebels would do talks, negotiation,  allow more sunni's in parliament . Foreign reporters would be allowed to do news coverage etc... but it didn't materialize because -

Houla massacre - It is a region in Syria , where 100+ civilians were killed in may 2012. Syria alleged Al-qaeda while Houla residents alleged Syrian military.

After this Houla massacre , the rebels started attacking government establishments again and thus providing convenient excuse to Assad to continue mass - murdering again.

India's stand -

  • India needs Saudi Arab for energy security and for keeping pressure on Pakistan over Kashmir and terror issues.
  • At the same time India can't ignore the strategic significance of Iran for its regional policy towards Afghanistan , Pakistan and central Asia.
  • Overall, India has signalled its board support for the Arab league and its positions on Syria.

This is the concept now start reading news paper specially international section and you will get it..

Daboo - khhaarrrrrr....khhaarrrrrrr...khhhaarrrrrr ( snoring )

B - Got it..

Me - Ok..Bye ..Dabooo wake - up.....

Daboo - I dreamt about a war yaar.. very scary...

Me - There are people living in middle of that war... chal tu pictures dikha..  (and we continue...............)

                                                                                               {THANKS TO MRUNAL..}
